Hysteroscopic Surgery
What is Hysteroscopy?
This is an examination performed to look at the inside of the uterus (womb). It is often performed under general anaesthesia; it can also be performed under local anaesthesia.
The procedure involves using a fine ‘telescope’ which is inserted into the vagina and through the cervical canal (neck of the womb). The uterus can be seen clearly under direct vision.
Why Hysteroscopy?
This is useful in diagnosing and treating some problems that cause abnormal menstrual bleeding (periods), infertility and miscarriages.
Hysteroscopy could either be diagnostic or operative.
Operative hysteroscopy
Many operations in the uterus can now be performed by hysteroscopy. The operations include removal of:
- Polyps
- Submucous fibroids
- Scar tissues in the uterus
- Division of uterine septum
- Resection of the endometrium to reduce heavy periods
Information regarding the procedure will be offered to you following consultation or before surgery.
